Amazon.co.uk Review
A film that’s rightly been gathering a richly-deserved reputation for being something of an underappreciated gem, Stardust is the second feature from director Matthew Vaughn. His first, Layer Cake, was a solid gangster effort, and his third, Kick-Ass, is emerging as 2010’s must see comic-book movie.

Stardust, meanwhile, is a charming, ambitious and really entertaining piece of fantasy cinema. Adapted from the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman, it tells the story of a young man who promises to head into a magical realm to bring back a falling star. From that concept is woven an involving story, that’s magically brought to life. Stardust is not a big budget film, but often, you’d be loathed to see it. There’s a real feel of a labour of love here, and it’s hard not to be smitten by the end result.

Furthermore, it’s served well by a terrific cast. Among the faces popping up in Stardust are Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes, Robert De Niro, Ben Barnes and Peter O’Toole, with Ian McKellen brought in on voiceover duties. But it’s ultimately the sheer look and feel of the project, beautifully evoked by a strong Blu-ray transfer, that makes this a film aching to find an even bigger audience. A 1080p treat, and a rough diamond of a film.--Jon Foster

4 out of 5 stars miscasting prevalent   March 8, 2010

This is a sweet movie. We all know how it will end,so there are no surprises, but there is a lot of imagination and many plot devices to keep the viewer entertained along the way. The biggest problem for me was that the major roles were severely mis-cast,with the notable exception of Michelle Pfeifer as a witch. She alone looked the part, was credible, acted marvellously, and looked like she was enjoying every moment of playing a wicked, old witch determined to do a terrible deed. This is a far cry from her usual parts, and given the witch was an old hag, ugly etc it took courage for her to take the part. The other key roles were very miscast. The young hero was not up to the role, and way too much of a "fop" with his floppy long hair. The beautiful young girl/star who falls to earth was also lacking in innocence, and the poor wig/blonde dye job on her hair did not help. Neither did her awful dress. De Niro was also in the wrong role for him. The insistence on using a huge English cast also meant that somehow David Brent/Gervais got into the film-when is someone going to be honest enough to tell him that he simply is not funny? Siena Miller looking like a footballer's WAG also looked about 15 years too old for the part.
This being said, the would-be King Septimus was excellent,as was the all-to-brief cameo by Peter O'Toole, and the mother and father of "fop" boy were excellent and credible as the original star-crossed lovers.
Definitely worth getting, but could have been much better with some better casting.

Excellent film. The quality of Blu-Ray is the only way to watch this brilliant film!

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies   March 1, 2010

This is just a wonderful story, with great acting. Right up there with Princess Bride (which I'm desperate to find in Blu Ray)... The BD version of Startuds is just beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Stardust (Blu ray)   February 28, 2010

Stardust is a fun filled, exciting funny and romantic film.Clare Danes is great with a stellar supporting cast-Robert DeNiro,Rupert Everett and Michelle Pffeifer-stand out.Ricky Gervais provides a nice cameo. The blu ray transfer is every bit as good as the HD Dvd release was some time back.Highly recommended, and one the whole family can enjoy-just be careful with the very young as there are a few 'scary' bits.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Film, Lousy Picture   February 28, 2010

Hugely enjoyable film, but the picture is nowhere near the quality expected from Blu-ray. If you own the DVD, there is no point in upgrading (I now own both).

If you don't own this in either format, there are a couple of extra features on the BD (but the film is unchanged from the DVD) which may be worth an extra couple of quid.
