Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Remarkably for someone who doesn't claim to be either an actor or a professional stand-up comic, Ricky Gervais has now triumphed in both fields. Animals Live is his one-man show at London's Bloomsbury Theatre during which the star of The Office ("That's two BAFTA Awards") presents a "lecture" on the animal kingdom in a shameless bid to inherit David Attenborough's mantle, since the old boy is getting on a bit and can't last forever. The subject is loose and broad enough to allow for plenty of digressions and amiable ramblings about sex, childhood, war and, of course, more sex.

There's something of Eddie Izzard's style in Gervais's approach, especially noticeable when he dissects the Biblical Genesis story for its absurdities; and he has also learned lessons from the father of his Office co-star Lucy Davis, Jasper Carrott. In the best segment, and one that's pure Carrott Confidential, Gervais reads out genuine animal "facts" from a website and comments gleefully upon them. Although his range is limited--he's neither an impressionist nor a mimic--Gervais gets by on a mixture of easygoing charm and bare-faced cheek, which in a short show of about an hour is all he needs to keep everyone laughing. --Mark Walker

5 out of 5 stars Wildly funny.   October 30, 2008

This was the first Ricky Gervais solo stand-up DVD I saw, and it did not disappoint. I found the video clips interesting and the commentaries hilarious. It's a genius but slightly twisted mind behind the show. I enjoyed the picking apart of facts and just the general ease with which Gervais delivered line after line of side splitting humour. Brilliant comedy DVD with some pockets of sentiment.

5 out of 5 stars Ian Hislop - You were wrong!!   January 3, 2008
This was just a blast. I loved the silliness of his animal related comedy. The humour was largely gentle, daft and sometimes even cute (see his swimming elephant impression!!). If you are looking for witty social commentary this is not the comedy for you - as a result I can see why some office fans don't like it. This is a completely different side of Gervais, a side I much preferred actually. I am not a fan of the office. I don't like my comedy to cut to close to the bone or make me feel uncomfortable - I appreciate the genius of it - but it's not my taste. This DVD is daft, and I loved it.

I thought this was hilarious. Classic moments like the daddy long legs sketch and the dolphins come to mind.

3 out of 5 stars lots of funny bits. not so strong as a complete show.   January 11, 2007

The first time I saw this was in broken bits and pieces and it made me ache to want to see the entire show as some of the clips just killed me.

When I finally got the see the complete show I realised that I had already seen the best bits and that the momentum for an entire (although very short) show was not really there.

Definitely worth a look though. Promising debut.

2 out of 5 stars I expected more.   December 18, 2006

Ricky Gervais seems to have something of a Midas touch - until "Animals". It was quite amusing, but that's it. I didn't watch it with excited trepidation for the next funny moment. I felt uncomfortable for Gervais whose audience laughed at the right places but generally seemed as disappointed as me.

I think Gervais is a comic genius - but here he tried something new and it simply wasn't strong enough. I've heard that his "Politics" show was far better, I will watch that and review.

If you're a big Gervais fan then you'll either love this because Ricky Gervais is in it, or you'll be disappointed as it doesn't compare to his other work.

Like I say - it isn't bad, it just isn't that good either.
